The existing flat had a strange layout which required reconfiguration; with a large sunny kitchen to the rear, a dark internal dining room, a further dark box room and corridor like hall.
Relocating the kitchen creates a large third bedroom. A structural opening between the living room and boxroom, creates a stunning sociable open plan kitchen/dining/living room. Taking down another box room wall creates a more spacious entrance hall. A useful utility room and WC is also installed here. An unusual new bathroom/shower room replaces the existing shower room. There is a full width bath accessed via a walk in shower.
The kitchen is opened up to the dining room to create a more sociable space, with improved access to the garden via sliding doors. Internal sliding doors to the living room allow a flexible layout. Glazed doors to the hall allow more light in. Below the stairs is opened up to create better storage and a flexible space for buggies or a desk.
On the first floor, a useful ensuite shower room is created in the master bedroom.
The small attic is transformed with built in cupboards either side of a bed to create a cosy bed nook below the sloping ceiling.
Most of my work comes from recommendations, so I was delighted to reconfigure the house of my previous client’s next door neighbour!
Again the kitchen is opened up to the dining room. The existing kitchen units are reused, to save money and the planet. Here there is a partition wall between the kitchen diner and living room. This wall has depth, a bit like a Scottish castle, containing a foldaway desk on the dining side and large alcoves for books on the living room side.
On the first floor, a small study is created off the master bedroom to facilitate working from home.

My client’s substantial property in Morningside, Edinburgh, was made up of several disconnected rooms. The former maid’s quarters to the rear had a kitchen downstairs and the family bathroom upstairs.
The kitchen was relocated to the former dining room. A wall was taken down to open the kitchen up to a new dining/family room. Giant double doors connect this space to the formal living room, whilst still allowing separation. A multi-functional utility room and study overlooking the garden was fitted into the former kitchen. Upstairs a new guest bedroom with en suite was installed in the former bathroom. A new family bathroom was constructed in the huge bedroom to the front of the property.
This 3 bedroom house in Mountcastle, Edinburgh was in need of complete refurbishment when we purchased it in 2016. My partner, a chef, was insistent that a 800 mm wide induction hob was required despite the small space!
The feature oak lined hatch, connects the kitchen and living room, whilst maintaining separate rooms. This is useful for keeping an eye on the children and for hiding from them! The large 800 mm wide induction hob doubles as extra worktop and space for placing hot dishes from the oven. The sink is placed close to the window to maximise worktop space. The height of the wall units was determined by the stair bulkhead on the ceiling and the existing hatch below. Because the wall units all align and are set down from the ceiling, this increases the feeling of spaciousness. Integrated appliances maintain the streamlined look.

My client’s 1 bedroom ground floor flat in Abbeyhill, Edinburgh had the smallest shower room I have ever seen.
A structural beam was installed to enlarge the room and create more space for the shower. Although still a small room, there is now the space to move required by the building regulations. Double doors installed in the place of a window greatly improve this flat by creating direct access to the garden.
